Frankfurt Airport worker dies in rare malaria outbreak

A worker at Frankfurt Airport in Germany has died from malaria in a rare outbreak believed to have been caused by infected mosquitoes transported into the country on an aircraft. Five other airport employees have also contracted the disease and are receiving treatment. The airport operator, Fraport, confirmed the death on Wednesday, August 26, 2026. The outbreak is under investigation by Frankfurt's Public Health Department. Officials are working to establish how the six infected men, who work in different areas and perform different jobs at the airport, became ill. None of the workers is known to have traveled to a country where malaria is common.
