France rallies past Belgium 4-1 to lead Nations League group

Published 5 October 2026

France recovered from a first-half deficit to beat Belgium 4-1 in their Nations League Group A1 match at the Stade de France on Monday, with four goals in the closing stages giving coach Zinedine Zidane his first home win in charge. Italy also won, beating Türkiye 3-1 in Bologna, leaving France three points clear at the top of the group, according to match reports. Belgium took the lead in the 35th minute when Dodi Lukebakio ran onto a long pass from Romeo Lavia and scored past France goalkeeper Guillaume Restes. France had possession but found it difficult to create chances against Belgium’s defensive setup, and the visitors carried their advantage into the later stages. France equalized in the 77th minute through Désiré Doué, who scored with a low shot from the edge of the area. Four minutes later, Michael Olise set up Rayan Cherki to put France ahead. The reports agree on the scorer and timing of the go-ahead goal but differ on the exact sequence: some describe Cherki finishing Olise’s pass or cutback, while another says the ball rebounded into the net off goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt. That difference does not affect the reported score.
