Fourth relocated Marineland beluga dies at Shedd Aquarium

Osiris, a 26-year-old female beluga whale relocated from Marineland to Chicago's Shedd Aquarium, died on the morning of September 21, 2026, after care teams observed sudden changes in her behavior and respiratory patterns, the aquarium said. Her condition declined rapidly and she died despite lifesaving efforts from veterinary and animal care teams. The death marks the fourth among belugas relocated from Marineland, the shuttered theme park in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Two other relocated whales, 23-year-old Peekachu and 20-year-old Rain, died at Shedd Aquarium in recent weeks, and 19-year-old Jelly Bean died at the Oceanogràfic de València aquarium in Spain the week before. A longtime Shedd resident beluga, Beethoven, also died earlier in September. Marineland began relocating 30 belugas and four dolphins in July 2026 to five aquariums in the United States and Spain after the Canadian government blocked a proposed sale of the animals to a Chinese theme park. The receiving facilities were Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, SeaWorld locations in San Antonio and San Diego, Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, and Oceanogràfic de València. Shedd took in 10 of the belugas.
