Four Chinese Research Vessels Tracked in US Arctic in 2026

Four Chinese research vessels have operated in the U.S. Arctic so far in 2026, compared with five during all of 2025, Rear Adm. Bob Little, commander of the U.S. Coast Guard's Arctic District, said in remarks reported on September 21 and 22. The ships sailed in maritime zones off Alaska, including around the Aleutian Islands, through the Bering Strait and as far north as the North Pole, Little said during a visit to Oslo for a conference on Arctic security. The vessels remained in international waters but did not notify Washington in advance through diplomatic channels, which he described as the customary practice. When Coast Guard crews queried the ships about their purpose, Little said the typical reply was that they were operating in international waters or conducting scientific research. Little described a twofold concern. One is that the work could constitute scientific research aimed at seabed mineral exploitation in areas the United States claims. The other is that the missions could give China a military advantage or threaten U.S. security. His concern centers on activity inside the U.S. exclusive economic zone or over the country's extended continental shelf, he said.
