Former Zambian minister killed in post-election security raid

Former Zambian transport minister and opposition politician Mutotwe Kafwaya was fatally shot by security forces during a raid on the residence of presidential candidate Brian Mundubile in Lusaka on August 14, police have confirmed. The operation, conducted by a joint security task force, occurred one day after the country's general election and resulted in the arrest of at least 11 people, including senior opposition figures. Zambian police chief Graphel Musamba stated that the task force encountered gunfire and resistance from unknown individuals during the operation in the Kabulonga area and returned fire, fatally wounding one person who was later identified by his family as Kafwaya. The government has said the raid targeted suspected militia activity and an alleged armed insurrection, claiming that restricted military-grade weapons and ammunition were recovered. Mundubile, who was present at the residence, rejected these allegations as "total fabrications" and described the operation as an attempt on his life. He stated he saw officers shoot Kafwaya twice. The death was initially shrouded in confusion.
