Former Michigan nurse charged in detainee’s hospital escape

Published 1 October 2026

A federal complaint alleges that former Michigan nurse Chloe Renae Freeman helped a Mexican immigration detainee leave Trinity Health Ann Arbor Hospital on May 28 before his treatment was complete. The man’s whereabouts remain unknown, according to the FBI affidavit cited in the complaint. Freeman has not been convicted. The complaint charges Freeman with instigating or assisting the escape of a person under arrest, a federal misdemeanor. The allegations rely largely on an affidavit by FBI Special Agent Michael Wagner, which recounts investigators’ account of the incident and their interviews. They have not been tested at trial. According to the affidavit, Border Patrol agents encountered the man in Ann Arbor on May 28. He ran, fell and injured his face, and agents took him to the hospital for medical evaluation. He remained in federal immigration custody and underwent a CT scan, the filing says. The affidavit alleges that after the scan, Freeman retrieved the patient from the CT room, removed his intravenous line and escorted him out through the hospital’s ambulance bay before he had been discharged or completed treatment.
