Florida DMV Confirms Data Breach After Hackers Claim Access

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles confirmed a data breach of its Driver and Vehicle Information Database, known as DAVID, after the cybercriminal group ShinyHunters claimed responsibility and posted a sample record as proof. The breach, discovered on September 4, 2026, was contained and is under criminal investigation, according to the agency. FLHSMV stated that its investigation determined the intrusion was caused by compromised credentials belonging to a single Plant City Police Department user. The agency said the login information was improperly stored on the employee's personal electronic device, violating access agreements. The department has notified the Florida Office of the Attorney General and is working with the Florida Digital Service and Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The cybercriminal group ShinyHunters, which has been linked to other major data breaches, claimed on its dark web site that it exploited a password reset flaw to access multiple DAVID accounts, including those of DMV employees and an FBI agent.
