First Niger Bridge Closed for Two Weeks

The Federal Government has announced a two-week closure of the First Niger Bridge, a critical transportation link between Anambra and Delta states, to facilitate emergency maintenance and rehabilitation works. The closure is scheduled to begin on Monday, September 7, 2026, and is expected to last until Monday, September 21, 2026. The announcement was made in a statement released on Friday, September 4, 2026, by the Acting Federal Controller of Works for the Federal Ministry of Works in Anambra State, Timothy Emenike. The statement cited the deteriorated condition of the bridge, particularly its carriageway surface and components affected by vandalism, as the reason for the urgent intervention. The works are being directed by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, who expressed serious concern over the bridge's state during a recent visit to the state. The maintenance work will be carried out by the contractor Messrs SKECC, which handles the Onitsha-Enugu Dual Carriageway.
