First breeding of disease-carrying mosquito found in UK

For the first time, the invasive Aedes aegypti mosquito, known to transmit diseases such as dengue, chikungunya, and Zika, has been found breeding in the United Kingdom. The discovery was made at residential properties in east London, prompting the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to implement control measures and enhance surveillance. The UKHSA announced the finding on September 3, 2026, identifying the mosquitoes and their larvae through its Mosquito Watch scheme. While the species has been detected in the UK on three previous occasions in recent years, this marks the first confirmed evidence of it reproducing in the country. Officials believe the insects were accidental importations, likely hitchhiking in vehicles, baggage, or with imported plants from regions where they are common. In response, the UKHSA has put measures in place to destroy the larvae found at the properties and has stepped up trapping and monitoring in the area. Dr. Jolyon Medlock, the agency's head of medical entomology, emphasized that the risk to the public remains very low.
