Fernandez beats top seed Andreeva to reach Singapore semis

Leylah Fernandez defeated top seed Mirra Andreeva 6-2, 7-5 on Friday to reach the Singapore Open semifinals, ending the fifth-ranked player’s tournament and setting up a match with Maja Chwalinska. The sixth-seeded Fernandez, a Canadian from Laval, Quebec, saved two break points in the third game of the opening set before breaking Andreeva and taking control. In the second set, Fernandez led 5-2 as Andreeva fought back to 5-5. Fernandez then broke serve in the 12th game to close out the match in 1 hour, 32 minutes. The victory gave Fernandez a 3-2 lead in her career meetings with Andreeva. Chwalinska advanced by beating defending champion Elise Mertens.
