Fernandez beats Gibson to win Singapore Open

Leylah Fernandez defeated Talia Gibson 7-5, 6-0 in the Singapore Open final on Sunday, September 27, to win her sixth WTA singles title. The Canadian recovered from a competitive opening set before taking control in the second, ending Gibson’s bid for a first tour-level title in her first final. Fernandez, the sixth seed and world No. 31, secured the opening set after the players traded breaks. She converted a set point at 7-5, then pulled ahead in the second set and completed the victory without dropping a game. The title was her second WTA 500 crown, following her win in Washington in 2025. Gibson, an unseeded Australian, reached the final after semifinal opponent Tatiana Prozorova withdrew under the WTA’s concussion protocol. Prozorova had also withdrawn from a doubles quarterfinal after being struck in the face by a ball on Friday. The withdrawal gave Gibson a walkover into her first tour-level final. Fernandez reached the championship match by beating fifth-seeded Maja Chwalinska 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 in Saturday’s semifinal. She had trailed heavily in the opening set before recovering to win in three sets.
