FBI Investigates Dark Web Sale of 153 Million Drivers Licenses

The FBI has launched an investigation into a massive data breach after a dark web service claimed to be selling digital scans of more than 153 million U.S. and Canadian drivers licenses, along with millions of other identity documents. The service, called Nexus, was advertised on a Russian cybercrime forum and appeared to be sourcing its data from an active breach at a Louisiana-based identity verification company. The breach was brought to public attention on September 1, 2026, when cybersecurity journalist Brian Krebs was alerted that his own Virginia drivers license was being offered as a free sample to advertise the service. Krebs confirmed the authenticity of the documents, which included scans of licenses from ordinary citizens as well as high-profile individuals such as U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The FBI's New Orleans field office has opened an official inquiry into the source of the images. According to the reports, the Nexus service claimed to hold more than 153 million drivers licenses, over 10 million ID cards, more than three million travel documents, and at least 579,000 medical cards.
