Father of A66 crash teen charged over funeral assault

The father of a teenager killed in a crash on the A66 in Middlesbrough has been charged with assaulting a mourner at his own son's funeral, Cleveland Police said. Gye Worthy, 39, was arrested at Teesside Crematorium on Wednesday, September 9, after a disturbance broke out during the service for his 17-year-old son, Cole Worthy. He has been charged with common assault, a public order offence and obstructing police, and is due to appear at Teesside Magistrates' Court on October 2. According to the force, the disturbance occurred after comments were made during the service. In a statement, Cleveland Police said the 39-year-old man arrested at the crematorium following the disturbance had now been charged and would appear before magistrates next month. The mourner who was allegedly assaulted has not been identified, and the specific comments that prompted the disturbance have not been made public. Cole Worthy was one of five young men killed in the early hours of August 22 when a Volkswagen Passat travelling the wrong way on the A66 collided with a marked police car near South Bank.
