Family Presumes Canadian Skyrunner Died in Matterhorn Fall

The family of Canadian skyrunner Kalie McCrystal believes she fell and died while descending the Matterhorn on September 1, 2026, after an extensive search failed to locate her. In a statement shared on September 15, her mother, Wendy Cooper, and sister, Jody McCrystal, said everything they now know suggests she fell during her descent of the iconic Alpine peak. McCrystal, 38, was last seen on September 1 during a reconnaissance outing on the Italian side of the Matterhorn. She was scouting the route ahead of a planned attempt to set a fastest-known-time record for climbing and descending the mountain via the Lion Ridge in under five hours. The Skyrunner World Series reported she was last seen descending toward Cervinia after reaching the summit at approximately 3:45 p.m. An extensive search was launched by the Guardia di Finanza mountain rescue team, which explored the unforgiving terrain for two weeks. Despite aerial and ground efforts, no trace of McCrystal was found, and the search has been discontinued. The family expressed deep gratitude to the Italian rescue team, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and the Canadian Embassy for their support.
