Family Alleges Ontario Grandmother Euthanized Without Consent

The family of an 83-year-old Ontario woman is demanding answers after she was euthanized under Canada's Medical Assistance in Dying program, alleging she did not consent to the procedure. Brigitte Stegemann, a devout Christian with stage 4 stomach cancer, died on July 10 at The Pearl care home in Cannifton, Ontario. Her granddaughter and long-time caregiver, Brigitte Kranendonk, has filed appeals with the Ontario Chief Coroner's Office, the Patient Ombudsman, and Belleville Police, claiming the procedure was carried out against Stegemann's will. According to Kranendonk, her grandmother had previously expressed a clear refusal of assisted dying, stating, "No, I don't want that." Kranendonk alleges that during a cognitive assessment to determine eligibility, Stegemann incorrectly stated she had no living siblings, despite having two. Two days before the scheduled procedure, Kranendonk said she confronted her grandmother with the reality of what was planned. "She was bawling. Inconsolable," Kranendonk recounted. "She cried for 45 minutes and said, 'I've made a mistake.'" On the morning of July 10, Kranendonk alleges a nurse struggled to insert an IV, causing significant bleeding.
