Ex-Border Patrol Commander Retired During Probe

Former U.S. Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino was under internal investigation for alleged misconduct, including questions about his credibility and accusations of antisemitic remarks, when he retired in March 2026. The investigation, confirmed by Customs and Border Protection (CBP), involved allegations that surfaced partly due to his testimony in federal court and comments made to a prosecutor. The inquiry was initiated on March 2, 2026, when an internal investigator notified Bovino that CBP was conducting an official inquiry into reported allegations of misconduct. Bovino was required to answer a series of questions, including those related to U.S. District Judge Sara Ellis's findings in a Chicago federal court case. Judge Ellis had previously questioned Bovino's credibility during a deposition concerning his use of crowd-control tactics during "Operation Midway Blitz" in Chicago. In her ruling, Ellis stated Bovino was "evasive over the three days of his deposition, either providing cute responses to Plaintiffs counsels questions or outright lying.
