Evan Rachel Wood says former 'Practical Magic' castmates didn't contact her about sequel recasting

Evan Rachel Wood, who originated the role of Kylie Owens in the 1998 film Practical Magic, has stated that none of her former castmates from the original movie contacted her about the upcoming sequel, Practical Magic 2. The film, which is set for release on September 10, 2026, recasts the role with Joey King. Wood shared her perspective in an Instagram story on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. "I really appreciated Joey King reaching out to me, because no one who worked on the original film did," Wood said. She described King as "a sweetheart" for making contact. King, who takes on the role of Kylie Owens, the now-grown daughter of Sandra Bullock's character Sally, confirmed the conversation in a separate interview, expressing gratitude for Wood's support. The recasting decision was explained by the sequel's director, Susanne Bier, at the film's premiere. Bier told Variety that the choice was driven by the story's timeline, which places the characters in their early twenties. "It was not a personal thing. It was that the kids in the story are right out of college, and so it wasn't really a question," Bier said. "We had to recast.
