Europe's Largest Carbon Capture Facility Opens

Europe's largest industrial carbon capture facility has officially opened at Yara's ammonia and fertilizer complex in Sluiskil, the Netherlands. The facility is designed to capture 800,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually from ammonia production, liquefy it, and transport it by ship to Norway for permanent storage beneath the North Sea seabed. This marks the establishment of Europe's first commercial cross-border carbon capture and storage (CCS) chain. The inauguration was attended by high-ranking officials, including the Prime Ministers of the Netherlands and Norway, and the European Commissioner for Climate, Net Zero and Clean Growth, underscoring the project's significance and European Union investment. The captured CO2 will be loaded onto specialized vessels operated by Northern Lights, a joint venture involving Equinor, Shell, and TotalEnergies, and transported to their receiving terminal in Øygarden, Norway. From there, a pipeline will carry the CO2 to the Aurora reservoir, located approximately 2,600 meters beneath the North Sea seabed.
