EU Ministers Meet in Ireland to Bolster Ukraine Air Defences

European Union defence and foreign ministers convened in County Wicklow, Ireland, on September 1, 2026, for a two-day meeting focused on bolstering Ukraine's air defences and addressing growing concerns over Russian destabilisation efforts across the continent. Ukraine's acting defence minister, Yevgeniy Khmara, joined the discussions, which were chaired by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas. The talks occurred against the backdrop of a deadly Russian missile and drone barrage that killed at least 12 people in Kyiv and its surrounding region overnight from August 31 to September 1, just as children were returning to school after the summer break. "Russia is really escalating to hurt the people of Ukraine as much as possible, to break them," Kallas stated. Ministers acknowledged the severe constraints on increasing the supply of air interceptors to Ukraine.
