Ethereum targets quantum-resistant L1 by 2029

The Ethereum Foundation has set a firm deadline of December 2029 to make the network's Layer 1 blockchain resistant to attacks from quantum computers. This commitment, detailed in a new roadmap, treats quantum resistance not as a distant research goal but as a critical objective requiring timely implementation. The Foundation is preparing for the potential arrival of sufficiently powerful quantum computers, referred to as "Qday," as early as 2030, a timeline that aligns with similar preparations by major technology companies like Google, Cloudflare, and Microsoft. The Foundation's Protocol Cluster has outlined this target as its primary objective through 2029, aiming for full quantum resistance across Ethereum's execution, consensus, and data layers. This proactive approach is intended to replace vulnerable cryptographic systems well before they could be compromised. The cluster acknowledges that planning for Qday in 2030 is an aggressive assumption, exceeding many current forecasts. The path to quantum resistance will involve a series of network upgrades, beginning with the Hegotá hard fork, which is expected to commence implementation in late 2026 or 2027.
