Essex council launches private security patrols over migrant concerns

Essex County Council has launched a three-month trial of private security patrols in three town centres, a move the Reform UK-led authority says is a direct response to resident concerns about gatherings of male migrants from a nearby asylum accommodation. The initiative, named Operation Vanguard, began on Monday with six guards deployed in pairs to Braintree, Colchester, and Chelmsford. The council stated the patrols are funded by up to £150,000 from a community improvement fund, with the trial expected to cost about £118,000 plus VAT. The security guards, supplied by the firm My Local Bobby, have no special powers and can only perform a citizen's arrest like any member of the public. Council leader Peter Harris said the operation is a direct response to ensure how safe and secure residents feel. He stated the council cannot and will not wait for an increase in antisocial behaviour and crime before acting. The patrols will operate from 10am to 6pm, seven days a week, to deter antisocial behaviour and provide reassurance. The decision follows the Home Office's plan to expand the capacity of the nearby Wethersfield asylum accommodation from 800 to 1,245 people.
