England and Wales pubs can now use digital ID for alcohol age checks

New laws in England and Wales took effect on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, allowing pubs, off-licences, nightclubs, and restaurants to use certified digital ID apps to verify a customer's age for alcohol purchases. The system is voluntary for both businesses and customers, with physical identification such as driving licences and passports remaining valid. The change, which amends the 2003 Licensing Act, permits businesses to accept digital proof of age from a range of third-party suppliers, including Yoti and Luciditi, provided they are on a government-approved list. Customers can use an app on their phone to generate a time-limited QR code after a biometric check, such as a facial scan, to prove they are over 18. Digital Government Minister Stephanie Peacock stated the change would mean people "do not need to carry a physical ID, nor hand over sensitive personal information such as your name or address just to prove your age, allowing everyone to feel safer on a night out." The government argues the system will reduce the risk of sensitive data exposure and make age checks quicker and more secure.
