Emir of Gumel dies in Cairo

The Emir of Gumel in Jigawa State, Alhaji Dr. Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, CON, has died in Cairo, Egypt. The monarch passed away on Thursday, September 3, 2026. The death was announced by former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Professor Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, in a condolence message issued on Thursday. Professor Pantami stated that the emir died after reigning for nearly 46 years, having ascended the throne on December 16, 1980. He was 85 years old. Professor Pantami described the late emir as a distinguished scholar, a beacon of wisdom, and a father to all, noting that he dedicated his reign to the service of his people, the promotion of peace and education, and the preservation of cultural values. The Gumel Emirate is recognized as one of the oldest and most respected traditional institutions in Northern Nigeria, founded in the 18th century. It boasts a rich history of scholarship, governance, and service, contributing significantly to the intellectual and moral development of the region. The emirate has remained a symbol of peace, unity, and cultural heritage in Jigawa State.
