Eleven killed in shooting at South African house gathering

Gunmen killed 11 people, including a pregnant woman, and wounded three others when they opened fire on a gathering at a house in the KwaMakhutha township near Durban on Tuesday night, South African police said. The attack occurred shortly before 11 p.m. local time on September 22, 2026, as people gathered at the home for a party in the Ziko area, about 30 kilometers south of Durban on the country's east coast. Armed assailants entered the premises and opened fire on those inside. Police said no arrests had been made and a manhunt was underway for the suspects. Initial investigations pointed toward three male suspects, according to police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda. Ten of the victims were men, police confirmed. The motive remains unknown. Police said some of those at the house were known to authorities in connection with criminal investigations, and stated that a feud between rival groupings could not be ruled out, while emphasizing that the motive could not yet be confirmed.
