Election Commission Recognises Vijay's TVK as State Party

The Election Commission of India has recognised the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, the party led by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, as a state party in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, and has reserved the whistle as its election symbol. In a communication dated September 9, 2026, the Commission said it had reviewed TVK's performance in the 2026 Assembly elections and found that the party fulfilled the conditions prescribed under Para 6A of the Election Symbols Reservation and Allotment Order, 1968. A formal notification regarding the symbol will be issued separately, the Commission said, following the party's request for the symbol dated July 2, 2026. Vijay announced the recognition in a message to supporters on X on Thursday, September 10, describing the party's rise in the 2026 Assembly elections as an unprecedented miracle in Tamil Nadu politics. He said the party had secured 35 percent of the votes in the election, 27 months after its formal launch, and said the result had made TVK the single largest party. Vijay thanked the Tamil community, party cadres and campaign organisers, and pledged an honest, corruption-free administration committed to secular social justice.
