Elderly Man Fatally Shot by Stray Bullet in Burnaby Home

Published 9 September 2026

An 85-year-old man was found fatally shot in his Burnaby apartment, with police preliminarily attributing his death to a stray bullet from an earlier shooting. Chang Yong Cho was discovered during a welfare check on August 30, hours after Burnaby RCMP responded to reports of gunfire in the vicinity. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is leading the investigation into the death, which occurred in the 7400 block of Kingsway, approximately one block from where shots were reported near 18th Avenue and Humphries Avenue. Police received the initial call about shots fired around 1:30 a.m. on August 30, but the suspect vehicle had already fled the scene by the time officers arrived. No injured victims were immediately located. Later that afternoon, around 4 p.m., Mounties were dispatched for a welfare check on Cho. Upon entering his apartment, they found him deceased from a gunshot wound. Preliminary findings suggest Cho was an uninvolved victim struck by a stray bullet from the earlier incident. Investigators have identified a group of youths believed to be involved in or have knowledge of the shooting and are appealing for their cooperation.
