El-Rufai rejects revenge as he reflects on changing ties

Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai said he would not seek revenge or retribution for any injustice, ingratitude or injury, as he reflected on how his legal difficulties had altered his view of some relationships. In a personal statement dated September 23, he said he would leave ultimate accountability to God and remain guided by his conscience. In the statement, titled “My Relationships and the Aftermath,” El-Rufai said adversity had given him a clearer perspective on relationships with people he had supported. He said he might quietly reconsider some of those relationships, but did not intend to condemn people for their choices or judge them because they responded differently than he or others might have expected. El-Rufai did not name the people he had in mind. His statement described possible silence, public support or distance from past relationships as choices others were free to make. The reports do not independently establish that particular associates withdrew support or identify anyone involved. He said his past support for people and causes was based on his belief that it was right, not on an expectation of praise, gratitude or reciprocity.
