EFF No-Confidence Motion Against Speaker Didiza Defeated

Published 27 August 2026

The Economic Freedom Fighters' motion of no confidence against National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza was defeated on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, with 282 members of parliament voting against the motion and 101 voting in favour. The vote, conducted during a virtual sitting of the National Assembly, followed a debate in which the EFF accused Didiza of failing to defend Parliament's constitutional powers in the impeachment process involving President Cyril Ramaphosa. The motion, tabled by EFF leader Julius Malema in June, centred on Didiza's decision not to oppose Ramaphosa's application to the Western Cape High Court seeking to interdict parliamentary proceedings against him.
