Ebola Outbreak Spreads to 7th Congo Province, Raising Regional Fears

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has spread to a seventh province, marking its first appearance in western Congo and raising fears of regional transmission. Health authorities confirmed a positive test for the rare Bundibugyo virus in SudUbangi province, a region bordering the Central African Republic and the Republic of Congo. The case was identified in a 23-year-old man who died on Tuesday after traveling from the outbreak's epicenter in eastern Congo. According to a local lawmaker, the man had journeyed from South Kivu province through Rwanda and Uganda before returning to Congo and traveling through several provinces to SudUbangi. Doctors alerted authorities after he presented with a fever and was vomiting blood. The development underscores the outbreak's continued geographic expansion. As of Wednesday, government figures reported 6,942 cases and 3,349 deaths. The World Health Organization, in an update issued Thursday, reported 6,757 confirmed cases and 3,267 deaths across 61 health zones in six provinces as of September 7. The discrepancy reflects different reporting dates and methodologies.
