DWP Begins Pension Credit Review to Cut Overpayments

Published 26 August 2026

The Department for Work and Pensions has begun contacting hundreds of thousands of pensioners as part of a review of Pension Credit claims, a move aimed at reducing overpayments and saving £370 million from the benefits bill by April 2031. Selected recipients are being asked to provide documentation, including recent bank statements, to verify their entitlement. The review campaign, first announced by former chancellor Rachel Reeves during last year's Budget, is now underway. The DWP has started making contact with "selected customers" for case reviews, though it has not disclosed the total number of pensioners being scrutinized or the methodology for selecting cases.
