Driver jailed for six years over boy’s death in Leeds

Colin Agyei was sentenced to six years in prison after a jury at Leeds Crown Court found him guilty of causing death by dangerous driving in the 2022 collision that killed five-year-old Abdullah Ebrahim. The court also banned Agyei from driving for more than seven years, according to one account of the sentencing. The collision happened on July 7, 2022, on Back Camberley Street in Leeds. Agyei was driving a Nissan Note when he struck Abdullah as the child ran across the road. Abdullah died in hospital. Reports of the court proceedings said Agyei had driven past a no-entry sign onto the one-way street. Judge Tom Bayliss KC said Agyei took the route as a shortcut to save time while making deliveries. In remarks reported during sentencing, the judge said the street was clearly signed and narrow, and that children might be playing or crossing there. He said Agyei was not speeding but was driving at an inappropriate speed. The judge also accepted that Agyei was remorseful and had been unaware of the collision. Agyei admitted a lesser offence of careless driving, but the jury convicted him of causing death by dangerous driving.
