Dream take 2-0 lead over Liberty after overtime win
The Atlanta Dream beat the New York Liberty 101-98 in overtime Wednesday, taking a 2-0 lead in their best-of-five WNBA semifinal and moving within one win of the Finals. New York’s loss also left the defending champions facing elimination in Game 3. The game’s final possession became a point of dispute after Angel Reese made two free throws with 4.3 seconds remaining, putting Atlanta ahead by three. The Liberty did not use a reset timeout, which would have allowed them to advance the ball to half court, and Breanna Stewart attempted a long shot as time expired. Stewart said after the game that she asked officials whether New York had a reset timeout and was told the team did not. Liberty coach Chris DeMarco gave a similar account, saying staff members had received the same information. New York has made an official inquiry to the WNBA about the timeout and the communication with officials, according to reporting attributed to Annie Costabile. Crew chief Fatou Cissoko-Stephens offered a different account in a pool report. She said Stewart was standing behind referee Kevin Fahy when he confirmed with another official that New York had a reset timeout remaining.
