DNC Sues to Halt Taxpayer Funding for Trump Ads

Published 7 October 2026

The Democratic National Committee sued the Trump administration in federal court on October 7, seeking to stop further taxpayer funding for television advertisements featuring President Donald Trump and have the spending declared unlawful. The complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, alleges the ads violate federal restrictions on government publicity or propaganda. No court has ruled on the claims. The DNC argues that the advertisements promote Trump politically rather than serve an authorized government purpose. Its lawsuit asks a judge to block federal money from paying for their production and broadcast. The complaint names Trump, the White House, the Department of Homeland Security and the Office of Management and Budget as defendants, and alleges that money intended for Customs and Border Protection was redirected to the campaign. Those allegations remain for the court to assess. The ads began airing in September, ahead of the November midterm elections. The White House has defended them as nonpartisan public-service announcements intended to promote the country, rather than support particular candidates.
