Djokovic loses to Navone in five sets at US Open

Published 31 August 2026

Novak Djokovic suffered a stunning first-round defeat at the 2026 US Open, losing to Argentina's Mariano Navone in a grueling five-set match that ended the 24-time Grand Slam champion's remarkable streak of opening-round victories at major tournaments. The fourth-seeded Djokovic was visibly unwell throughout the contest, vomiting multiple times and receiving medical treatment before falling 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-4, 2-6, 1-6 in a match that lasted four hours and 36 minutes on Arthur Ashe Stadium. The loss marked Djokovic's first exit in the opening round of a Grand Slam since the 2006 Australian Open, ending a run of 78 consecutive first-round wins at majors.
