Discord Rolls Out Revised Global Age-Assurance System

Discord began rolling out a revised global age-assurance system this week, automatically assigning users to Adult, Teen or Unconfirmed groups based on account-level signals and adding alternatives for people asked to confirm their age. The company says most users will not need to submit information manually, though that expectation has not yet been measured after the rollout. The system places users aged 18 and older in the Adult group, those aged 13 to 17 in the Teen group, and accounts it cannot confidently classify in Unconfirmed. Discord says its model considers factors such as account history, activity patterns and associated servers or communities. It says the system does not analyze messages, calls, images or other content to estimate age. Users can check their classification in account settings and seek confirmation if they believe it is incorrect. Discord chief technology officer Stanislav Vishnevskiy said the company expects more than 90% of users will not need to verify their age manually. That figure is a company estimate, not a reported result from the rollout.
