Delhi to redevelop Chandni Chowk Town Hall as Global Heritage Centre

The Delhi government and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi have signed a memorandum of understanding to redevelop the historic Town Hall complex in Chandni Chowk into a Global Heritage Centre. The agreement, signed on September 20, 2026, between the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation and the MCD, was witnessed by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta at the Delhi Secretariat. The project aims to conserve the Grade-I heritage structures, which include the Town Hall, the Press Building, and an adjoining park, and adaptively reuse them for tourism and cultural activities. The complex, built between 1860 and 1866, covers approximately 12,180 square metres in the historic Chandni Chowk and Shahjahanabad areas. It served as the MCD headquarters until 2010, after which a large portion of the site has remained largely vacant. Under the terms of the MoU, ownership of the complex will remain with the MCD. The DTTDC has been tasked with conducting surveys, undertaking a structural assessment, and preparing a Detailed Project Report for the redevelopment.
