Delhi HC rejects petition on DUSU election political participation

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday rejected a petition that sought to prevent candidates affiliated with student wings of political parties from contesting the Delhi University Students Union elections, ruling that their participation does not violate the Lyngdoh Committee guidelines. The court stated that student wings are distinct from political parties, and membership in such wings does not equate to association with a political party. The petition was filed by Delhi University student Vijeta, challenging the August 13 election notification and the September 11 candidate shortlist notice issued by the Chief Election Officer. The petitioner argued that student wings of parties including the National Students Union of India, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, and the Aam Aadmi Party's student wing were fielding candidates, which allegedly breached the Lyngdoh Committee report and a 2006 Supreme Court order that requires student unions to be disassociated from political parties.
