Delhi Building Collapse Sparks Protest Vandalism

A five-story building housing a boys' paying guest accommodation collapsed in Delhi's Satya Niketan on Sunday afternoon, September 6, 2026, resulting in at least six fatalities and 11 rescues. The incident prompted a protest by members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) at the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) headquarters, which escalated into vandalism and clashes with police. Approximately 150 to 200 ABVP protesters gathered at the MCD's Civic Centre on Sunday evening, demanding accountability and the resignation of MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar, citing alleged civic negligence in building safety standards. The situation intensified when some protesters attempted to force their way into the MCD building, leading to police intervention. Around 15 protesters were detained by Delhi Police and taken to Kamla Market police station, while the remaining demonstrators were dispersed. During the confrontation, parts of the MCD office sustained damage, including broken glass, and a security guard was reportedly injured. The collapse occurred around 1:30 p.m. in the densely populated Satya Niketan area of southwest Delhi.
