Delhi building collapse kills 7, owners in custody

A five-story building operating as a paying guest accommodation in Delhi's Satya Niketan collapsed on Sunday, September 6, 2026, killing seven people and injuring five others. The collapse occurred around 1:30 p.m. while repair work was reportedly underway in the building, located near Delhi University's South Campus. Rescue operations, involving the National Disaster Response Force, Delhi Fire Service, and Delhi Police, continued for more than 27 hours before concluding on Monday, September 7. Among the deceased were students and workers. In connection with the incident, Delhi Police arrested property owner Hariram Gupta, 81, his wife Urmila Gupta, 75, and their 52-year-old son Mahesh Gupta. On Monday, a Delhi court sent Hariram and Urmila Gupta to 14 days of judicial custody, while Mahesh Gupta was remanded to two days of police custody. Hariram Gupta, a retired Indian Air Force Sergeant, was apprehended in Bhiwadi while attempting to leave the area. Investigators are examining the family's alleged role in operating the paying guest facility and overseeing renovation work, particularly in the basement, which is considered a likely cause of the collapse.
