DBS Citi Complete Tokenized Singapore US Payment

Published 7 September 2026

DBS Bank and Citi have successfully completed their first tokenized cross-border payment between Singapore and the United States, a transaction that settled in minutes over the weekend. The operation, conducted on Saturday, September 5, 2026, utilized tokenized deposits via SWIFT's Digital Ledger, demonstrating a significant acceleration compared to the traditional two business days often required for international transfers. This milestone transaction bypasses the constraints of conventional banking hours, enabling funds to move 24/7, including on weekends and across different time zones. Officials stated that this capability addresses historical limitations in global finance, where liquidity could not be moved outside of standard operating schedules. For industries like e-commerce and digital services that function continuously, the ability to settle payments in real time represents a substantial shift in treasury management and liquidity risk control. Tokenized deposits are digital representations of money held in traditional bank accounts, distinct from cryptocurrencies as they remain linked to commercial bank deposits and operate within the regulated banking system.
