Dave Boyle to Direct New Reimagining of Japanese Horror Film Pulse

Director Dave Boyle has been tapped to helm a new reimagining of the influential 2001 Japanese horror film Pulse, marking the second attempt to adapt the story for English-language audiences. The project is being developed by Sony's Screen Gems and Spyglass Entertainment, with Parker Finn and Jonathan Fass producing through their Bad Feeling banner. Boyle will also revise a screenplay originally written by Luke Piotrowski, whose credits include The Night House and the 2022 Hellraiser remake. The new film is described as a reimagining rather than a direct remake, with story details currently under wraps. It is set in the modern era and will feature a new set of characters, distinct from both the original and the 2006 adaptation. The original Pulse, written and directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2001. The technohorror film follows young people who encounter strange phenomena linked to a mysterious website, technological breakdowns, and missing friends. It became a defining work of the J-horror genre, noted for its atmospheric dread and commentary on isolation in the digital age.
