Engelbert, who became the league's first commissioner in 2019, oversaw significant growth, including a new media rights deal, collective bargaining agreement, and an expansion plan to grow the league from 12 to 18 teams by 2030. However, her tenure was also marked by tensions with players during negotiations and on various cultural issues. Silver, who led the search that brought Engelbert into the role, is expected to direct the selection process for her successor.
