Crypto Market Cap Hits $2.82T as Bitcoin Breaks $81,000

Published 3 September 2026

The global cryptocurrency market capitalization surged to approximately $2.82 trillion on September 3, 2026, marking its highest level in more than seven months as Bitcoin broke above $81,000 and major altcoins posted double-digit gains. The broad rally triggered a massive wave of short liquidations and spilled over into crypto-related equities, signaling a significant recovery from the market's sharp selloff earlier in the year. Bitcoin's price climbed to around $81,460, up over 5% in a single day, after reversing from a 10-day low of $76,200. The move was fueled by over $100 million in ETF inflows and over-the-counter activity, according to market analysts. The breakout forced a violent squeeze against bearish traders, with CoinGlass data showing over $140 million in short positions liquidated within an hour and more than $400 million in total liquidations over 24 hours, affecting nearly 110,000 traders. While Bitcoin led the charge, the rally was defined by even stronger performance from altcoins. Zcash's native token was the standout, jumping over 17% in 24 hours to trade near $943. Cardano gained over 12%, while Dogecoin and XRP each climbed roughly 10%.
