Cronos Halts After Tectonic Exploit Causes $75M Loss
The Cronos blockchain network halted all operations on August 30, 2026, following a security exploit that targeted Tectonic, its largest decentralized lending protocol. The attack, which involved the manipulation of the protocol's TONIC token, resulted in preliminary loss estimates of approximately $75 million, according to onchain researcher Weilin Li. The emergency halt prevented the majority of the affected assets from leaving the Cronos network. The exploit centered on the price of TONIC, Tectonic's thinly traded governance token. Li reported that an attacker artificially inflated the token's price by roughly 100 times within about 20 minutes.
