Cricket Australia BBL Privatisation Sparks State Dispute

Cricket Australia's decision to proceed with private investment in the Big Bash League (BBL) has ignited a significant dispute with Cricket New South Wales (NSW), which has issued a strong warning about potential long-term damage to the sport. Cricket Australia's board approved a self-determination model on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, allowing individual states to decide on private investment for their BBL clubs. However, Cricket NSW, which oversees the Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder, has rejected the plan, expressing disappointment that the move lacks broad consensus across Australian cricket. Cricket NSW stated that the decision risks leaving cricket in NSW and Australia strategically and financially worse off, with direct consequences for its ability to invest in grassroots cricket. The state body argued that redistributing profits to external investors would reduce funding for community cricket, creating long-term impacts at all levels. They also expressed dissatisfaction with the process leading to the decision, asserting that their concerns and an alternative pathway to strengthen the BBL had not received sufficient consideration.
