CPI(M) reshuffles Kerala leadership after election defeat

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has reorganized its Kerala leadership following a significant electoral defeat, censuring State Secretary M.V. Govindan and reshuffling its state secretariat. The decisions were made during a three-day extended state committee meeting in Kozhikode that concluded on Tuesday, September 15, 2026. The party's state committee reportedly censured Govindan for the Left Democratic Front's (LDF) loss in the 2026 Assembly polls, citing flawed candidate selection and organizational shortcomings. Govindan, who also led the party's campaigns in the 2024 Lok Sabha and 2025 local body elections, did not confirm or deny the censure, stating that such details are organizational matters. As part of the restructuring, the state secretariat was reconstituted with the induction of veteran leader P. Jayarajan, former ministers V. Sivankutty, and M.B. Rajesh. The move is seen as significant for Jayarajan, who had been sidelined from the top panel for a long period. Conversely, senior leaders T.M. Thomas Isaac and T.P. Ramakrishnan were removed from the secretariat, though they remain central committee members.
