Cowboys Free Up Cap Space Hinting at Trade

Published 8 September 2026

The Dallas Cowboys have significantly increased their financial flexibility, freeing up approximately $19 million in salary cap space through contract restructures. Owner Jerry Jones confirmed on Tuesday that the team now possesses "serious" room to pursue a trade, with the total cap space exceeding $30 million and the potential to roll over unused funds into the 2027 season. This strategic financial maneuvering, which involved reworking deals for defensive tackle Kenny Clark, cornerback DaRon Bland, and tight end Jake Ferguson, suggests the team is preparing for a significant roster addition. Jones indicated that any potential acquisition would likely target the defensive side of the ball, aiming to bolster a unit that allowed a league-high 30.1 points per game last season. While the Cowboys recently acquired offensive tackle Broderick Jones from the Pittsburgh Steelers, Jones stated that defensive upgrades remain the primary focus for any in-season moves. Despite holding only five selections in the 2027 NFL Draft, Jones expressed a willingness to trade draft capital to acquire immediate talent, emphasizing the priority of building the best possible team for the current season.
