Court withdraws all charges against Masemola

The Pretoria Magistrates Court formally withdrew all four charges against suspended National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, ending a criminal case linked to a contested South African Police Service health services contract. Masemola had faced four counts of contravening the Public Finance Management Act for allegedly failing in his oversight duties as SAPS accounting officer in relation to the Medicare24 Tshwane District contract awarded to Vusimuzi Cat Matlala. He was formally charged on April 16 by the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption and became the 17th co-accused in the broader criminal case against Matlala. The withdrawal followed a review ordered by National Prosecuting Authority head Andy Mothibi. The review considered IDAC's evidence, a report by the Case Assessment Panel and an assessment by an independent senior counsel appointed to participate in the process. NPA spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said the National Director of Public Prosecutions was satisfied there were no reasonable prospects of a successful prosecution on the Public Finance Management Act charges and had issued instructions that the charges be withdrawn.
