Conservative Party Challenges Government Over Wandsworth Tax Rise

Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has instructed lawyers to challenge government funding cuts that have led to a proposed 94% council tax increase in Wandsworth, a southwest London borough. The move marks a significant escalation in a political dispute over local authority funding in the United Kingdom. Badenoch announced the legal action during an appearance on BBC Newsnight, accusing the Labour government of deliberately redirecting funds from areas that do not vote Labour to those that do. She stated that Wandsworth has faced a 40% cut in central government funding, compelling the council to raise council tax to compensate. "It is outrageous that Wandsworth Council is having to put up council tax," Badenoch said. "But they're not doing it because they want to. It is because the government has taken away 40% of their funding." Wandsworth Council, historically known for low council tax, is one of six councils granted special powers to increase council tax beyond the usual 5% annual threshold. The proposed rise would see Band D bills jump from £1,020 to £1,978. A final decision is expected early next year.
