Congress reshuffles Uttar Pradesh leadership ahead of 2027 election

Published 4 October 2026

The Congress has reshuffled its Uttar Pradesh leadership ahead of the 2027 Assembly election, naming Aradhana Mishra Mona as state party president and assigning new senior roles to Imran Masood, Devinder Nishad and Alok Prasad. The appointments replace Ajay Rai as state chief, while decisions on a possible Congress-Samajwadi Party alliance and seat-sharing remain with national leaders, Mishra said. A party notification appointed Mishra, previously leader of the Congress Legislature Party in Uttar Pradesh, as president of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee. Masood, a Lok Sabha member, was named working president, and Nishad and Prasad were appointed senior vice-presidents. The party also named Chaudhary Virendra Singh as leader of its legislature party in the state. The reshuffle comes as Congress seeks to strengthen its organisation before the election. The appointments include leaders identified in reports as belonging to Brahmin, Muslim, extremely backward-class and Dalit communities. Analysts cited in reporting described the lineup as part of an effort to broaden the party’s support, but its electoral effect is not yet known.
